Netball Tournament: Triumphant Belle ground the Jets

BELLE Construction beat Yeovil Jets to win at the South and West Dorset tournament which saw teams from across Dorset face off at Budmouth College.

The event, organised by Sian Whitlock of Coastal Cheese and Donna Butcher of OJOs, saw teams randomly put into two round robin groups with matches reduced from an hour long to 12 minutes.

The knockout rounds ended with Waterside at the top of group one, followed by runners-up New Body Fitness; Belle Construction was top of group two, followed by Yeovil Jets. The final saw Belle Construction earn a hard fought victory against the Yeovil Jets after both teams made it through their respective semi-finals.

Despite a tough morning of matches, both teams came on with superb energy. Belle were able to move the ball up the court effortlessly to the circle, where GA Katherine Wilberforce was waiting to convert. New Body kept fighting with their centre, Nicole Birley, moving well through the midcourt to put pressure on Belle.

The second half of the match was equally tense, with New Body upping their game to gain more scoring opportunities. Belle kept up their determination with their strong attack allowing them to maintain their lead and earn a place in the final.

The Jets started well, with defensive pressure allowing them to gain possession of the ball and score the first goal off of Waterside’s centre pass. Waterside countered by upping their attack, moving brilliantly down the court to the D; however Jets remained ahead thanks to GA, Charlotte Corkshaw, who was quick to take advantage of scoring opportunities.

Waterside upped the pressure in the second half with GK, Rachel Kilby, making skilful use of rebounds. Jets managed to stay on top however, earning their position in the finals.

Both teams came out fighting, with Belle scoring the first goal from Jets’ centre pass. Belle continued to put pressure on Jets with excellent teamwork and fantastic communication from GD Louise Buglar.
